overview

With the establishment of EMMA at ACCAD, the College now has a working and producing space – essentially a “black box” space, with a healthy orientation to research, process, and experimentation. Our Studio 5 has been modestly functioning on an ad-hoc basis as a classroom and dance and technology dedicated space. For the past few years, there has been a hodge podge of equipment, tables, half-broken chairs, an old couch, over 15 year old flooring, tattered drapes, etc.

With the use of “Tuition Set Aside for Technology” funds, we are renovating Studio 5 to be a sister space to EMMA; in order to continue to generate new ideas, knowledge and product in dance and all the arts, diverse work spaces are needed. The flexibility of the White Box would also embolden the oft-challenging notion of interdisciplinary arts. We would welcome and encourage faculty and students in art, music, design, to work with dancers in this space through course work or projects.

The Department continues to see the integration of technology as a priority, both as site for research, as well as in a service and teaching capacity. The Studio 5 White Box would offer the balance to the Black Box of EMMA: light and white, modestly supported by media systems, nimble and flexible in its adaptation for multiple uses:

  • Technology smart classroom space for dance courses
  • Working space for students in dance and technology courses
  • Small lecture room for visiting artists and scholars.
  • Teleconferencing space for courses, distance learning, and international interactivity
  • Meeting and reception space for special events

For information on reserving this space, please see our general Sullivant Hall dance studios page.
